About Guildford

Guildford Issues

Guildford is a great place to live and work but Anne continues to fight for good local services. Anne has called on the Government to end its unfair funding of the NHS in Surrey and is chairing the Surrey MPs Campaign to call the Government to account and ensure that local people get the NHS services they need and deserve.

Guildford is also under enormous economic and environmental pressure. The Government wants huge numbers of new houses to be built and local concern is rising about the impact this would have on the countryside, water supply and the already congested traffic. Sustainable solutions are needed that give people affordable homes within the urban centres whilst ensuring that there is proper investment into public transport, environmentally sustainable ways of dealing with our rubbish and much more decisions made at a local level by local people. Our countryside needs protecting.

Local schools, the NHS staff and the police work enthusiastically with local people. The schools and the local NHS have some of the best results in the country. But concerns about the future of Cranleigh Village Hospital remain with the beds and day hospital already having been closed. Anne has received an assurance that this will be looked at when the future of Royal Surrey is considered. Crime is low and the lowest in the Country but with a very lively nightlife, anti-social behaviour continues to be a problem in some areas.

There are a great number of voluntary bodies and charities working across the constituency. Do please use the links provided to find more about the fantastic work that they do. If you know of an organisation that isn’t included in the list please let Anne know via this website and she will include them. Supporting the voluntary sector is a priority for Anne and she uses much of her time visiting local charities to find out more about the work that they do and to support their fundraising events.

Guildford Constituency

Guildford constituency includes one of the finest towns and some of the loveliest villages and countryside in the Country. Guildford town is located in a gap in the North Downs where the River Wey breaks through the hills.

In the north the constituency includes the communities of Jacob’s Well, Worplesdon, Fairlands and Wood Street. South of the town the constituency stretches out along the Hogs Back to include Puttenham, Seale and Sands; down the A3 it includes Compton, Hurtmore, Eashing and Shackleford; and if you go south from the town you travel through the beautiful villages of Shalford, Chilworth, Bramley, Wonersh, Blackheath, Shamley Green and through Rowly towards the Sussex border travelling through Cranleigh, Ewhurst and Ellen’s Green.

Guildford’s history goes back nearly 1,500 years, and its roots, in Anglo-Saxon England, are visible in the town’s architectural heritage. There is a medieval guildhall and, in contrast, a modern cathedral. The borough contains some exceptionally beautiful countryside, including rolling chalk downs, ancient woodland, and a patchwork of fields and hedgerows. About 70 per cent of the borough lies within the green belt, and the southernmost rural parts lie within the Surrey Hills, an area of outstanding natural beauty.

London is only 30 miles to the north, and Heathrow and Gatwick are each about 40 minutes away. But Guildford is not just a satellite town of London, and has a thriving local economy. It also supports Surrey University, which, combined with its research park, is a key economic player, bringing in at least £550 million each year to the local economy.

Guildford’s political history

One of the poignant dates for Guildford was 1867 when it was decreed that only one Member of Parliament was to be returned to Parliament for this area. Before that date Guildford had two representatives who from the 16th Century to the 1800s were most often from three prominent local families, the Austens of Shalford, the Mores of Loseley and the Onslows of Clandon.
