A report on tackling child poverty reveals that affluent areas such as Surrey and Berkshire have been hit surprisingly hard by the recession.
Surrey and Berkshire have suffered the highest proportionate rises in unemployment with an 18% rise in families with both parents out of work. Unemployment has risen across the country and relatively this has had a greater effect on affluent areas such as Surrey where unemployment has more than doubled in the past year to over 14,000 cases.
Anne said: “There is no doubt that the number of people who have contacted me about debt has risen. Issues around housing costs, keeping small businesses afloat and the knock on problems with benefits claims and getting back into to work have notably increased.
The report shows that the recession has bitten across the country and in my role as Shadow Health Minister I am particularly concerned that this will have a detrimental effect on people's mental health and well-being."
