02 October 2009
The Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government has dismissed the proposal for a new settlement at Dunsfold Park following a four week public inquiry which closed on 3 April 2009.
In refusing the appeal, the Secretary of State said that the development in a rural area would be unsustainable for transport and conflict with all available planning policy. He did not feel that the benefits of some ‘greener’ ideas in the plans could outweigh this conflict. The developers have until 6 November to challenge the decision in the High Court.
Anne said:
“This is a victory for local decision making. These plans have been turned down at every level and I am delighted to see the Secretary of State support those local decisions. The Secretary of State makes it clear that the site is not in a sustainable location and little can be done to improve the existing infrastructure. Building a new town of that size where there is not enough transport would create chaos. Some of the aspects of the scheme to encourage low carbon lifestyles were positive but we still need to be building in the right places with local people having their say. My congratulations to everyone who took so much time to attend the hearings and make sure their views were heard.”
