On Friday 11 September, Anne Milton MP, Member of Parliament for Guildford, welcomed 70 parent carers to the Emmanuel Centre in Guildford. The event was organised by Carers Support Guildford and Waverley. Professionals from Surrey County Council, the NHS and service providers from the voluntary sector gathered to offer information and advice. Parents who care at home for children with long term or life limiting illness, physical disability, mental health issues or special needs from Guildford and Waverley were able to attend specialised workshops and raise issues about their own family’s needs.
Anne said:
“My thanks go to Carers Support in both Guildford and Waverley for all the work they have put into organising the day for parents who are caring for children with special and complex needs. We’ve had a huge turn-out which just goes to demonstrate the amount of progress we’ve still got to achieve before we can truly say we are giving people the support they need and deserve”.
Maria Hewson of Carers Support Guildford said:
"Today was a positive step in bringing carers together to offer them support, information and advice. The day was well attended with a third of carers not known to our project. We hope that they will now be able to benefit from our service. A huge thank you to Anne Milton MP for her support of our project and the huge amount of work she does to raise awareness of carers’ issues and needs. Carers Support (Guildford ) can be contacted on 01483 458123, Carers Support (Waverley) on 01252 718166"
The organisers also expressed huge thanks to those who helped to fund the day, Eagle Radio’s community trust in particular, but also contributors at the Toast of Surrey Awards evening and KallKwik printing in Woking.
